President Ramnath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio Program 2019 on Saturday. Under this program, more than 17 crore children will get polio medicine.

According to the release of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President started nationwide Pulse Polio Program-2013 by administering polio medicine to children under the age of 5 years on the eve of National Immunization Day. National Polio Day will be celebrated on Sunday. Polio treatment will be given to more than 17 crore children under the age of 5 years under vaccination campaign for eradicating polio from the country. On this occasion, Health Minister J P Nadda said that this vaccination campaign, being run under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is aimed at completely protecting children from more than 5 diseases than before.

He said that for this new vaccines like pneumococcal conjugate, rotavirus and Miguel rubella have been started. Nadda said that in order to provide additional protection to the children, the government has also included inactivated polio vaccine in its regular vaccination campaign to give polio medicine through injection.

The Union Minister said that the government is making all efforts to save children from more and more diseases. He emphasized on ensuring that all vaccines under the vaccination campaign could reach the children in every corner of the country.

Nadda said that with the universal vaccination campaign, Mission Rainbow has also been started in the country so that more than 90 percent of the children can be targeted for immunization.

He said that under the Mission Rainbow, 3.39 crore children and 87 lakh pregnant women have been vaccinated so far. The Union Health Minister said that the child mortality rate in the country has declined considerably due to the strength of immunization campaign. In the year 2014 where it was 39 children per thousand, in 2017 this has decreased to 32 children per thousand.
